Before traveling to China, prepare mobile payments, international cards and a cash backup. This guide explains Alipay, WeChat Pay, QR code payments, bank cards and common failure points.

Pre-Departure Payment Checklist

Install Alipay and/or WeChat from official app stores. Link an international bank card if the app and card issuer support it. Test login, identity verification and SMS access before flying. How QR Code Payment Works

In China, offline QR payment usually works in two ways: the merchant scans your payment code, or you scan the merchant payment code. Before paying, confirm the amount, merchant name and network connection. If a larger or first payment fails, try another card, a smaller amount, cash, or another payment method.

Common Reasons Payments Fail

The bank card is not enabled for overseas or online transactions.
SMS verification does not arrive, especially after changing SIM cards or disabling roaming.
The account needs additional identity or passport verification.
Network is unstable, the QR code expired, or the merchant payment method is unsupported.

Is a Credit Card Enough?

Do not rely only on a credit card. Large hotels and some malls may accept cards, but daily restaurants, small shops, metro, taxis and attractions often rely on mobile payments.

It may work, but it is not ideal. After arrival you may face network, SMS, card verification or bank support issues. Install apps and complete basic setup before departure.
