What is BMI?

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a simple measurement that uses your height and weight to estimate your body fat. First introduced by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s, it is still recommended by the WHO as a population-level screening tool. The formula is: weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared.

BMI Classification

According to WHO standards, adult BMI is classified as: under 18.5 (underweight), 18.5-24.9 (normal range), 25-29.9 (overweight), and 30+ (obese). Note that BMI is a reference indicator only and does not fully reflect health. Athletes and muscular individuals may have a high BMI but normal body fat percentage.

How to Use This BMI Calculator

Using our online BMI calculator is simple. Choose between metric (cm/kg) or imperial (ft/in/lb) units, enter your height and weight, click calculate, and get your BMI value along with weight classification. We also provide health advice to help you improve or maintain your current weight status.

BMI Limitations

While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has important limitations: it cannot distinguish muscle from fat, does not reflect fat distribution (especially belly fat), and may be less accurate for the elderly, athletes, pregnant women, and different ethnic groups. It is recommended to combine BMI with other health indicators like waist circumference, body fat percentage, and blood pressure for a more comprehensive assessment.
